Causes and Effect

Illiteracy Among Children Around the Globe

Imagine that you are walking along the corridor of a kindergarten, as you peek inside the classroom you see young and enthusiastic children learning ABCs. However, notice that there are a few children that are unable to catch up with the pace. Illiteracy is defined as the inability to read. Illiteracy happens to all children around the globe due to three main reasons which are ignorance of the society, mental disability and third world crisis.

First of all, the society nowadays practices “ignorance” in their daily lives. They do not care about what is happening around them. Just because an issue does not affect them personally, they will not even bother to give the slightest thought about the matter. The society thinks that illiteracy amongst children is not their problem and they blame teachers for not doing their job properly. The truth is, the teachers are not the ones who are to be blamed, but the people in the society are to be blamed because they simply did not do anything to resolve the matter.

Besides that, illiteracy also happens to certain children who suffer from mental disability. Children who suffer from mental disability have trouble when it comes to learning ABCs and learning how to read. In certain cases, these children can learn but at a slower pace compared to normal children. These children need a lot more attention when it comes to teaching them. So, mental disability is also the cause of illiteracy among children around the globe.

Next, most of the children who are from third world countries are unable to read and write. This is because of their poor background, the government are unable to provide funds to improve the education system in the country. As a result, the children face a lot inconvenience when they are learning. For example, children in Africa do not have a proper classroom, they read and write from the texts scrawled on the ground. The children are not provided with a suitable learning environment, this in turn affects their learning ability and thus, causes illiteracy.

In conclusion, illiteracy happens to all children around the globe. We must take full responsibility and work together in handling this issue. As the saying goes, “one small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind”, a small effort will surely make a big difference.
