ILLITERACY AMONG
CHILDREN AROUND THE GLOBE
The best definition of illiteracy is the
inability use language to speak, write, read and listen. Because of illiteracy,
a great number of people are limited in their ability to clearly communicate with
each other. Even in the developed countries also, illiteracy is very common,
but no one knows that it can lead a developed country to the bottom. The
statistic reveals that about 50000 of children around the globe are illiterate.
This research was be done by University of Cambridge and also discovered that
approximately 5% of children around the globe are illiterate mostly in Asia.
There are various causes of illiteracy among children which is poverty, health and
nation conflict.
First, one of the causes of illiteracy is
poverty. Realistically, most of the children who their family facing financial
problem are likely to quit their school early. This is because to help their
family financially by beginning to work. A poor family in addition, is focused on the necessities of
survival such as income and food, rather than books to help the mind grow.
Based on the basic people needs example food, clothes, safety and shelter are
less likely to develop a higher education. The economic inconstancy can
ultimately affect the populations’ literacy rate. To sum up, the cause of
illiteracy among children is poverty.
Furthermore, another cause of
illiteracy among children is regarding health. Literacy affects all domains of
life including one's health. In the United States, several studies have been
done on the relationship between health and literacy indicating an association
between bad health and illiteracy. As a result, the studies reveals that respondents
with lowest scores on reading ability compared with those reading better had a
worse physical as well as mental health, regardless of age, income, educational
level, and ethnicity. Thus, health problem are indeed one of the causes of
illiteracy among children.
Lastly,
nation conflict also one of the causes illiteracy among children around the
globe. A conflict can happened in many ways but the most crucial one is an
armed conflict in one nation which high probably due to political issues. This conflict
in other word war brings not only destruction, also on society involving the
children. The conflict aftermath are deeply terrible thus, its influence in
every aspect and one of it is in education. For example, children in Palestinian camps across
Lebanon showed that despite some improvement, 13 percent of youths have stunted
growth and half of all secondary school age kids are not receiving education.
Conclusion, the cause of
illiteracy is poverty, health problem and nation conflict. This matter can only
be resolve if all the people aware and takes an initiative to overcome it.
